Scent beads contain fragrance—and fragrance and sensitive skin do not always go together. Still, it does not have to be an absolute no-go. It depends on how you use them.
What’s in scent beads?
Scent beads are not detergent. They contain no surfactants or enzymes—the substances responsible for cleaning and often the culprits behind irritation in sensitive skin. Scent beads are designed purely as fragrance carriers: they dissolve during the wash and release their aroma into the fibers.
What they do contain are fragrance concentrates. These are needed for a long-lasting scent, but may still cause a reaction in people with a fragrance allergy or eczema—even without direct contact with the skin.

Scent beads for sensitive skin: three practical approaches
Do you have sensitive skin but still want to add a touch of fragrance to your laundry routine? Then dosage and choice of textiles are key.

Start with a low dose You decide how many beads to use. The standard dose is 5 grams. Start with a quarter of that and see how your skin reacts. Less fragrance in the fabric means less chance of irritation.

Use them for indirect-contact textiles Bedding, towels, and curtains come into less intensive contact with the most sensitive areas of your skin than, for example, a T-shirt or underwear. That makes them a good place to start when testing how you react.

Combine with a fragrance-free detergent Use the Lavoa Fragrance-Free Laundry Strip as the basis for cleaning and add scent beads only for specific washes. This keeps the cleaning gentle and gives you control over when and how much fragrance you use.

What about baby clothes?
Newborns’ skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults’ skin and reacts more quickly to fragrance ingredients. Up to six months, we recommend using only the fragrance-free laundry strip for baby clothes and bedding.
If you then want to carefully introduce fragrance — for example, for muslin cloths or sheets — start with a small amount and monitor the skin’s reaction. It is best to keep underwear and bodysuits worn directly against the skin fragrance-free.

What is the difference between scent beads and fabric softener for sensitive skin?
Fabric softener coats fibres with a greasy layer and often contains both fragrance and chemical softeners — either can cause skin reactions. Scent beads do not contain softening fats, only fragrance. For sensitive skin, scent beads are therefore somewhat easier to dose and avoid on specific garments.
Does any fragrance remain on clothes after washing?
Yes, that is the purpose of scent beads — the fragrance soaks into the fibres and lingers. For people with a fragrance allergy or very sensitive skin, this means that indirect exposure can also cause a reaction. An extra rinse cycle in the washing machine significantly reduces the fragrance concentration.
Which laundry strip is most suitable for eczema?
