Stories circulate online claiming that laundry scent beads could clog or damage your machine. Is that true, or is it nonsense? When used correctly, there is nothing to worry about—but there are a few things worth knowing.
Where does the concern come from?
The most common complaint is that laundry scent beads do not dissolve completely and therefore clog pipes or the drum. That claim is partly true—but only with cheap variants or when used incorrectly.
High-quality laundry scent beads are made from water-soluble polymers such as PEG (polyethylene glycol). They become completely liquid as soon as they come into contact with water. No residue is left in the machine, provided you put them in the right place: directly in the drum, not in the detergent drawer.
Always put laundry scent beads directly into the drum—never in the detergent drawer. The water pressure in the drawer is too low to dissolve them quickly enough.
Laundry scent beads vs. fabric softener: which is more harmful?
Ironically, liquid fabric softener is much harder on your machine than laundry scent beads. Fabric softener contains fats and oils that leave a slimy layer in the drum, on the rubber seal, and in the drain hoses. This layer is called grease buildup—it starts to smell and promotes bacterial growth.
