The sun is starting to shine more often and the days are getting longer: it’s time for spring cleaning. For many households, this is the perfect time to give the house a thorough clean. We wash the windows, air out the mattresses and dust the highest shelves. But there’s one appliance that is often forgotten, even though it works hard for you every day: the washing machine.
A clean washing machine is essential for fresh-smelling laundry and a longer appliance lifespan. In this blog, you’ll learn how to give your machine a fresh start.
Why cleaning your machine is so important
You might think that a machine that constantly works with water and detergent would keep itself clean, but the opposite is true. With every wash, small amounts of body oils, hair and detergent residue are left behind in the drum and seals.
When this builds up, ‘vetluis’ develops. This is a grey, greasy substance in which bacteria multiply rapidly. It not only causes an unpleasant smell in your machine, but can also leave stains on your freshly washed clothes.
Steps for a fresh machine
Want your washing machine to work like new again? Follow these three steps:
-
Clean the door seal: Take a damp cloth and thoroughly wipe the rubber seal around the door. Soap residue and trapped water often collect here.
-
Clean the filter: There is usually a flap with a filter at the bottom of your machine. Open it and remove any lint, coins or other objects that could block the drain.
-
Run a hot wash: Run an empty programme at 90 or 95 degrees. Do not add any laundry, but optionally add a small splash of vinegar to dissolve limescale and greasy residue.
The role of your detergent
After the deep clean, you’ll naturally want to prevent your machine from getting dirty again quickly. Your choice of detergent plays a major role here. Traditional liquid detergents are often thick and viscous, making them more likely to remain in the pipes, especially if you wash frequently at 30 or 40 degrees.
Laundry strips are an excellent way to help keep your machine clean. Because the strips dissolve completely and are precisely dosed, no excess soap is left behind to build up.
Start fresh
A clean machine is half the job. Now that your appliance is back in top condition, it’s the perfect time to replenish your detergent supply with a product that will also keep your machine clean in the long term.
